Help protect our wildlife from fishing line entanglements

Fishing is a popular pastime across Mandurah's waterways, but discarded fishing line and tackle can have devastating impacts on local wildlife.

Every year, birds, turtles, dolphins, and other marine animals become entangled in discarded line, hooks, and other fishing accessories left behind in the environment. These entanglements can cause serious injuries, restrict movement, prevent animals from feeding, and in some cases, prove fatal.

The good news is that simple actions can make a big difference.

What should you do if you find an entangled animal?

  • Keep a safe distance to avoid causing additional stress
  • Contact the Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055 for advice and assistance
  • For entangled birds, contact WA Seabird Rescue on (08) 9474 9055
  • Do not attempt to remove hooks or fishing line yourself unless instructed by wildlife experts
  • If safe to do so, take note of your location and provide details about the animal's condition

Prompt reporting gives trained wildlife rescuers the best chance of helping injured animals.

Every piece of fishing line matters

Many entanglements can be prevented through responsible fishing practices, including:

  • Taking all fishing line, hooks, and tackle home with you or disposing of in a general waste bin
  • Not cutting the line if you accidentally entangle a bird – find out more from River Guardians
  • Picking up any discarded fishing gear you see, even if it isn't yours
  • Sharing these simple messages with family and friends

By doing your part, you can help keep Mandurah's waterways safer for the wildlife that call them home.

Join Luca's Legacy and help make a difference

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce fishing line pollution, community members are invited to join the annual Luca's Legacy clean-up event.

The event focuses on removing litter from popular fishing locations while raising awareness about the impacts of marine debris on local wildlife.

Whether you're a keen angler, a nature lover, or simply want to make a positive contribution to the environment, everyone is welcome to get involved.
